Year [2]
PRECEDENT Project
Tadao Ando 4x4 House
Bird house
A dwelling specific to our assigned bird, mine being the Manakin Bird.
Boat House
Project completed after a studio wide trip along the Mississippi River. We spent a series of days observing water and land conditions alongside the river.
House boat
Completed after a studio wide trip along the Mississippi River, the house boat is intended to dock at a former project completed before, the boat house. We spent a series of days observing water, light and land conditions alongside the river.
Focusing on the importance of path, and the way the human foot makes contact with path systems, I chose to highlight interior illumination off of the water surface to light a house boat meant for wandering. By perching the hull up off the water surface, I was able to maximize the amount of sun input from all directions. Given extreme sunlight exposure, the scale of the exterior skin acts as a high contrast interruption as it is just large enough to mask a single human as they navigate the interior path network.
The nature of the external skin is to allow for disorintation due to the contrast between both scales of sunlight exposure. The goal being that the building users might rely on the security of an interior path system that guides to the boat core, where the most interior shaded space exists.

Phobia Machine
After selecting a phobia, we analyzed the ways that phobia is connected to light, sound, wind and texture. Isolating and continuing research on those four relations would eventually lead us to the type of environment the "machine" was meant to create. The machine's purpose was to act as a catalyst for symptoms of that phobia, instill the inverse in the user, or even surface perhaps just one defining symptom of the phobia. The purpose would eventually become specific to each machine within the studio. Working in partner's we then began construction alongside conceptualization.
Working with Kelsi Thrasher, we opted to combine our two researched phobia's to create a hybrid phobia, the fear of self confrontation.

Each plastic panel poses a question forcing one to reflect. The idea being that the user would answer each question with the typewriter provided, which contained no paper or ability to record the answer. By typing, an open circuit wired to a VCR located above the ceiling panel would power on. All wiring was strung from the VCR down the already suspended panel, beneath the raised platform and up though the typing podium. The drumhead on the VCR was equipped with a miniature paint roller which had clear fishing lines connected to each of the 5 panels. The more one questions one answers, the more enclosed they become.
Film and mapping
Chicago
Utilizing film, we were to collect footage of light, sound, materiality, and behavioral patters within Chicago. We then arranged our own clips, in conjunction with appropriated footage, into a narrative that followed the intentions previously defined from the full scale machine. The goal; to discover connections between researched phenomena and observed reality. Below you'll find the final iteration of my own film.
Isolating a number of scenes within the created film, we were to map the narrative using selected geometeries as a codification system.
Mausoleum
The codification system is called out in the arrangement of the above ground urns, dedicated to the homeless of Chicago, for who the Mausoleum is designed to commemorate. Each major district of Chicago would be represented by color, allowing both building users and those passing on the elevated line to identify those who have passed from their own district.
Utilizing scale, elevation, and light, the mausoleum is designed to create an awareness for the otherwise unknown.
